Megan Kimmel Biography

I grew up in Denver, Colorado playing lots of sports: soccer in the spring and fall, basketball in the winter, tennis and softball in the summer and not to forgot lots of backyard baseball and touch football with my brother who taught my the hook shot and who still owes me $100 from our on going 'around the world' basketball sessions! When I hit high school age I had to choose between sports depending on the given high school season so I ended up running Cross County, and playing Basketball and Soccer. Of all the sports, I lettered all 4 years in Cross Country.

I chose to use my college years as a time to broaden my horizons by studying abroad and left sports behind. All the while though, running was the thing that I could take with me everywhere I went and it proved to be the thing that kept my body and mind feeling good within any change in place.

Part way through college I took a year off and landed in Aspen, Colorado where I lived in my friends VW van for a summer while working for the local florist. Having a mobile home placed me at the base of many trail heads which matched my desire to run with the beauty and adventure of trails.

I casually did a trail race or two (Colorado's Golden Leaf 1/2 Marathon and The Imogene Pass Race) for a number of years until 2008 when I qualified for the USA Mountain Running Team. From that year on, I have raced intensely both in the United States and abroad trying to take advantage of all opportunities to experience more of the worlds environment and culture. More than anything trail racing has taught me a lot about determination and patience.

I presently live in Silverton, Colorado where I spend most my time owning and operating the town's coffee shop while training in the Wheminchu Wilderness Area (the United States largest Wilderness Area outside of Alaska). My hobbies have taken the wayside for training except for photography which I am beginning to do more of and high altitude baking!
