Grand Opening Weekend Features ASICS Athletes, Free Product, “Fun Run” and Grand Prize Trip Give-Away

IRVINE, Calif. (October 22, 2009) – ASICS® America, a leading athletic footwear and apparel manufacturer, will open its first U.S.-based retail store on Friday, October 23, 2009 in New York City. The 1,100-square-foot store will be located at 51 West 42nd Street in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, near Bryant Park. Opening weekend festivities will feature ASICS’ professional athlete guest appearances, in-store promotions, a “fun run” through the city starting at Bryant Park, and a grand prize trip give-away.

“Despite a down economy, ASICS America is still seeing significant growth in sales,” says Rich Bourne, President and CFO, ASICS America.  “New York is an active city in the running community which ASICS has long been a part of through our support of the ING New York City Marathon. We feel this is the perfect time and place to mark our debut as a retailer in the U.S.”

As the first stand-alone ASICS retail outlet in the United States, the store will stock running specific merchandise including footwear and apparel, and will have a sleek design aesthetic with traditional ASICS white and royal blue coloring similar to it’s predecessors in London and Tokyo. A main draw for the store will be the proprietary ASICS Foot ID system, which includes a 3D scan of the foot along with gait analysis to help consumers determine the best shoe for their foot and running style.

ASICS Foot ID’s 3D scan utilizes a cross-section of lasers and cameras to measure all aspects of the foot including the arch, boney architecture of the upper, length, width, heel and ball girth. The consumer simply stands on two pads located on the scanner and information is entered into a database. The consumer then runs on a special treadmill to collect additional information about their running gait. A specifically trained ASICS staff member will interpret all of this information and provide a recommendation on which shoes will work best for that individual. The gathered information will also be shared with the ASICS Research and Development center in Japan for future research.

“The state-of-the-art ASICS Foot ID system allows the customers to experience first-hand what ASICS technology is all about,” says Gary Slayton, VP of Marketing, ASICS America.  “ASICS is known for our innovation, and we are proud to be bringing a piece of that to the floor of our first U.S.-based retail store.”

Grand opening events for the public will take place throughout the weekend of October 23, including appearances from ASICS Olympic athlete Lolo Jones, product giveaways, a “fun run” on Saturday, October 24th at 8:00AM starting in Bryant Park and a chance to win a grand prize all-expense-paid trip to an ASICS-sponsored Marathon. Thank you for extending your invitation for an exceptional running experience at the NY Grand Opening Fun Run.
As a novice on and off runner lacking in endurance and technique, with the need for additional down time for recovery
I haven't been able to get myself out there in the pack where I'd like to be.

In preparation for this event I purchased a pair of ASICS running shoes, thinking it was the least I could do considering my lack in running expertise. The run started with an educational briefing before the warm up, helpful hints and explanations during the warm up, continuous support from Tony and the other members from the Central Park Runners (Pacers) during and after the run. I've been lifted to a new level of running.

First and foremost credit goes to my new ASICS running shoes, after the cheers and refreshments I literately felt good walking away. I've always had a problem running on my toes.  The ASICS running shoe actual supported me in way to get me back on my heels (yea!).  Turns out purchasing a pair of ASICS running shoes was the best thing I could have done.

Secondly I have a better understanding and appreciation for pacing a race. I tend to be all over the place walk / running my 5k's, breaking in and out of various paces as the mood hit me.  I recommend finding a group with the insight and support that Tony and the Central Park Runners provided me on this day.

Not over yet, went back to the ASICS store to see if they could provide a FOOT ID where they analyze your foot structure and recommend a shoe style for you.  The staff was very informative, I learned that I didn't need to try lengthen my running stride.

All in all, nice day, nice run, enjoyed the loop through lower Central Park.

Hello,

I was very excited to hear about the new store. I have been wearing Asics for as long as I can remember. For the last two years I have been kinda crazy about the light weight running shoes done by Asics, but they dont last long as i hit the streets of the city for runs. I had the Piranha's two years ago in red, then over the summer got the SP 2 in green, now i would really like thge New SP 3, but they are impossible to find in NY. I dont want to order them online, so please could you get them in stock at your FLAGSHIP STORE???

Thanks,
Michael Pierson

Thank you for your comment and support of ASICS!

We have checked with the store and they are expecting the Piranha SP® 3 to show up around March 1st, when it is scheduled to be released to select retailers.  Looking forward to seeing you in a pair!

Great store, can only recommend it. Really liked their selection, only a pity it's a four hour drive for me.

I know the new Asics Piranha 3 has been out a while but I am looking for any held over stock of the Piranha SP 2. Green is school colors. Is there anyway to locate a pair of 10's anywhere I am happy to order online. Also it would be nice to get maybe just a black with silver for the Sp4. Thanks
