Andy Potts wins Ford Ironman 70.3 California

As the defending Ironman 70.3 World Champion and also the defending event Champion, Andy Potts is racing with a big bull's-eye on his chest this season. He did not seemed bothered by his recent success as he started off his 2008 campaign the same way he ended 2007, with a victory in an Ironman 70.3 competition. Potts dominated the field in the swim portion, exiting the water over a minute ahead of his competition. He held the lead throughout the bike segment although his lead shrunk as a group of talented riders closed in on him as they entered T2. Potts led for most of the 1/2 marathon until he was passed by Craig Alexander 400m from the finish line. Potts dug deep and found another gear to overtake Alexander seconds from the finish line, breasting the tape in 3:58.22, 3 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
